Bloating and Gas

Bloating and gas are among the most common gastrointestinal complaints, often described as a feeling of fullness, tightness, or a visibly distended abdomen. While gas is a natural byproduct of digestion—produced when bacteria in the colon ferment undigested carbohydrates—excessive gas or a high sensitivity to normal amounts of gas can cause significant distress. This discomfort can stem from swallowing too much air (aerophagia), eating too quickly, or consuming specific "gassy" foods like beans, broccoli, and carbonated beverages. However, persistent bloating can also be a symptom of underlying conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), food intolerances (like lactose or fructose malabsorption), or functional disorders like IBS.

The approach to managing bloating and gas involves identifying specific triggers through a process of elimination or breath testing. Reducing the intake of high-fiber foods temporarily and then slowly reintroducing them can help the gut adapt. Probiotics are sometimes used to balance the gut microbiome, though their effectiveness varies by individual. In cases where bloating is related to slow motility, medications that encourage gastric emptying may be helpful. Understanding the "mechanics" of gas is also beneficial; for instance, identifying if the gas is primarily in the upper GI tract (often from air swallowing) or the lower tract (from fermentation) can guide whether the solution lies in behavioral changes or dietary restrictions.
